Many of these bacteria build up as plaque, causing tooth decay (cavities) and gingivitis, which can lead to periodontal (gum) disease. For a healthy smile, you must practice good oral hygiene every day. Brushing after meals, using antimicrobial mouthwash, and flossing at least once per day helps to keep these disease-causing bacteria from reproducing in your mouth, and causing tooth decay. And, healthy diets that minimize sugary and starchy foods also helps to keep those bad bacterial under control.


1.) Always brush your teeth twice – Brush your teeth in the morning as well as at night before sleep. Don’t go to bed without brushing your teeth. Brushing before bed gets rid of the germs and plaque that accumulate throughout the day.

2.) Flossing is important as brushing – The American Dental Association recommends cleaning between your teeth daily with an interdental cleaner (like floss). Cleaning between your teeth may help prevent cavities and gum disease. Cleaning between your teeth helps remove a sticky film called plaque. Plaque contains bacteria that feed on leftover food or sugar in your mouth. When that happens, it releases an acid that can eat away at the outer shell of your teeth and cause cavities.

3.) Drink more water – Saliva actually defends tooth decay, specifically the minerals in saliva such as calcium and phosphate. Saliva also helps wash away food residues that may be hanging around on your teeth. Drinking water helps prevent against dry mouth by creating more saliva to keep tooth decay away

4.) Avoid sweets – The two destructive bacteria found in the mouth are Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus sorbrinus. Both of them feed on the sugar you eat and form dental plaque, which is a sticky, colorless film that forms on the surface of the teeth.

5.) Avoid acidic food – Sugar isn’t the only culprit when it comes to tooth decay. High levels of acid in everyday foods and drinks can be just as harmful. From oranges to wine, high-acid foods and drinks can wear away your teeth, causing decay, sensitivity, and discoloring. But that doesn’t mean you have to strike all acidic foods and drinks from your diet. The way you consume these items can lessen their damage to your teeth.

6.) Use mouthwash – Mouthwash is a liquid so it offers the benefit of reaching areas that a toothbrush just can’t get to. Adding mouthwash to your brushing routine can clear debris and loosened plaque on your teeth that have been left behind. It reduces the amount of acid in the mouth, cleans hard-to-brush areas in and around the gums, and re-mineralizes the teeth

7.) See your dentist twice a year for a normal checkup – Regular dental visits are important because they help to keep your teeth and gums healthy. During the dental check-up, your dental professional will check your overall oral health for any trouble areas. During the cleaning, your dental professional will remove any plaque and tartar buildup and may polish your teeth.
