What is a blackhead or a whitehead?
Both blackheads and whiteheads are a result of excessive oily sebum and dead skin cells getting trapped in the clogged hair pores of the skin. The medical community calls these types of bumps sebaceous plugs or comedones. But the opening of the pore is different in each.
In a blackhead, open comedones, the part of the pore at the surface of the skin is stretch and open. The black colour you see consists of dead skin cells, bacteria and oil that’s oxidized and stuck down in the pore.
A whitehead is also a clogged pore, but unlike a blackhead, the top of the pore is not stretch and open. The surface of the pore is closed, so dermatologists call this a close comedone.
Causes of blackheads and whiteheads
Sebaceous gland. which is present under the skin, produces sebum. When the dead skin shed of it combines with oily sebum and form a blockage of the sebaceous gland at the base of the skin. And results in the formation of comedones. This is most common when the skin becomes thicker at puberty.
Other causes include family history, stress, fluctuations in hormone levels, hair and skin care products, medication side effect and un-diagnosed or underlying medical conditions.
